Flying With Pets

Flying with your pet doesn’t need to be stressful! Let’s navigate your flight-planning together.

Many commercial airlines allow pets to be transported in the aircraft cabin or in cargo. While each airline has specific rules and restrictions, the following list is most common:

  • pets must be at least 8 to 10 weeks of age

  • pets must have proof of vaccination and/or health certificate signed by a veterinarian associated with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)

  • pets must have import/export certificates signed by USDA veterinarian for international flights

  • pets traveling internationally must be microchipped with an ISO-compliant chip (15-digit key)

    • the chip must be implanted before or on the same day as any Rabies vaccine

    • We recommend HomeAgain (World Chip) and AKC Reunite (Trovan)

    • We also recommend registering the microchip number with the International Pet Registry

  • in-cabin pets must be in a soft-sided carrier that can be stowed under the seat in front of you

    • the carrier must be leak-proof and ventilated on at least 3 sides

    • the pet must be able to sit, stand, and turn around comfortably inside the carrier

    • We recommend Sherpa pet carriers! TSA Compliant, airline-approved!

  • some airlines restrict brachycephalic breeds (short-snout) like French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Pekingese, Japanese Chins, etc

  • some airlines have in-cabin weight restrictions, usually capped at approximately 20 lbs (9.1 kg)

  • fees apply per pet and vary among airlines

  • Registered Service Animals are exempt from fees and carrier rule

    • proof of service/license is required by most airlines

    • the title of “Service Animal” is defined by the Americans With Disabilities Act as a canine trained to perform a specific task related to the handler’s disability

      • Examples: guide dogs, mobility support and/or retrieval, seizure alert dogs, sensory assistance, psychiatric service for PTSD

    • Emotional Support Animals are not considered Service Animals by most airlines and will be required to stay in an airline-approved carrier

Alternatively, you may consider pet-friendly charter flights, like K9 Jets or BARK Air. Private airlines like these allow pets to sit in seats or lie on the floor, walk around freely with you, and dine in style with pet-specific catering!

Though we can help alleviate the pressure of handling logistics, we know travel can be overwhelming for furry companions, too! Bright lights, strange noises, bustling crowds, take-off and touch-down, suddenly turbulent skies… Whether your pup’s new to traveling or a seasoned globe-trotter, airports and flying can be an anxiety-inducing experience for some pets! Be proactive — Talk to your veterinarian about options to calm the nervous energy, combat motion sickness, and keep your pet as comfortable as possible for the journey ahead.

We never recommend giving your pet any medications or supplements (including CBD) without consulting a licensed veterinarian.
